Can I keep my IUD for more than 5 years?

31-year-old woman3 years ago
I had my IUD inserted when I was 23. I will have had it for 5 years in October. Is there a risk of pregnancy if I keep it in for more than 5 years? I wanted to have it removed next May. Thank you Could it be dangerous, unwanted pregnancy, if I keep it for 5 years and 7-8 months if I was under 25 when I had it inserted?

Thank you for your question! Would it be possible to know which IUD you are currently wearing?
Thank you!

With hormones

Thank you for the clarification!
The amount of hormones released by the IUD 5 years after its insertion decreases, which can indeed decrease the effectiveness of the IUD, and increase the risk of getting pregnant, if you have unprotected sex. If you want to keep the IUD after 5 years, I suggest you use a second method of contraception, such as condoms.
I hope this has been helpful and I am available if you have any further questions!
