Can I just stop taking my birth control pill continuously when I want to try to conceive?

26-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello, I have been taking my birth control pill (marvelon) continuously for over 5 years. Me and my partner would like to have a child this year. I was wondering if I should start having a normal cycle again or if I can continue to be on the pill until I stop.

Hello Ma'am, thank you for your question!
The bleeding period during the 7 days of stopping the contraceptive is not menstruation because there is no ovulation. It is only withdrawal bleeding and is not necessary for health or fertility. You can continue to take it continuously if it is easier for you, and simply stop completely when you want to conceive. I would like to suggest taking folic acid at least 3 months before attempting to conceive, and to talk to your pharmacist/newsletter if you are taking any other medications, over-the-counter products, or anything else.
Cordially
