Is shingles on the face contagious?

62-year-old woman2 years ago
Since Monday, my spouse has been suffering from shingles on his face. Is it contagious (I've already had chicken pox)? After how long can he expect relief? His eye is swollen, he has already had corneal operations and he must see an opthalmologist soon. When should he go to the hospital emergency room?

Hello Ma'am,
If your spouse has active lesions, i.e. blisters, yes it can be contagious. The virus is spread by direct contact, so it will be wise to avoid sharing towels and utensils in particular, and sticking together until the blisters become scabs.
What do you mean by relief, does he or she have pain, or are you talking about the lesions? Lesions can take 5 to 10 days to begin to heal, especially if treatment is started early after they appear.
Has the swelling in the eye increased since he was seen by a doctor? If so, it will need to be re-consulted.
Cordially,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
