Pregnant and having hard stools?

29-year-old woman2 years ago
Hello, I am 14 weeks pregnant, since the beginning of my pregnancy I have a bowel movement about every 2 days (before I went every day) my stools are mostly harder. In short, this morning I had a hard stool and at the beginning of this month I had another stool, but more "normal" both times there was blood. There was already blood the last weeks, but not more. But today I really had more.

Hello Mrs,
In order to better advise you, would it be possible to obtain the following information:
  • Have you tried anything for this problem (bleeding, hard stools or other)?
  • Are you currently taking any medication?
Thank you!

Thanks for the feedback!
The source of the problem is often hard stools, and we usually try to address that first.
On the pharmacological side, I suggest PEG-3350 powder, marketed as Lax-A-Day, Restoralax, and other brands. It is a tasteless, odorless powder that should be taken in a glass of any liquid, once a day
For preventive and maintenance measures, I suggest increasing your fiber intake: fruits, vegetables, brown bread and rice, oatmeal, etc. and I encourage you to hydrate a lot during the day to help soften the stool. If a diet adjustment is difficult, there is a fiber supplement (Metamucil) that can be taken, but with the condition that you drink a lot during the day. Also, Metamucil should be taken at least 3 hours apart from your other medications.
I encourage you to try these measures. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. If the bleeding continues even if the stools are not hard, you should consult a doctor as a precaution.
Sincerely
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
