How long does it take to see a doctor for a cough (without spitting) that persists? Is it really 3 weeks? Thank you!

On November 28th, my 11 year old son started to get sick. We strongly suspect influenza (fever, fatigue, headache, cough, secretions). Since then, he has gotten better but his cough persists. He has a hoarse voice and coughs quite hollowly. This morning he tells me that he has pain in the back of his throat sometimes when he coughs. He doesn't have any chest pain according to him. I know that the cough always lasts longer but I am also afraid to miss something "more serious". He is not on any medication and has no illness of any kind. He sleeps well, eats well. It's really his hoarse voice and the cough that makes him tired.

Hello Mrs,
Generally, a cough following influenza can last up to 2 to 3 weeks. Therefore, patients are encouraged to consult a physician if the cough persists beyond 3 weeks. Otherwise, if your child is in poor general condition, unable to eat or drink, has a persistent fever, or has worsening symptoms, you should also consult a doctor.
Here are some measures to relieve the symptoms:
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Get as much rest as possible
  • Take honey to soothe the throat
  • Increase the humidity in the room
I hope I have answered your question,
