I have a cough even with codeine, what should I do?

32-year-old woman2 years ago
Following a consultation today at the clinic, I was diagnosed with viral pharyngitis. I was prescribed Teva Codeine 15mg to be taken every 6 hours for my cough as it has been preventing me from sleeping for the past 3 nights. Can I take 2 tablets, it seems that 1 tablet has no effect on my cough unfortunately.

Good morning, ma'am,
If you have other symptoms such as a blocked or runny nose, I strongly suggest nasal hygiene with a saline solution such as Hydrasense or Sinus Rinse, which can be done as often as needed during the day and at least 30 minutes before bedtime. It's a little uncomfortable but works wonders to decrease or prevent secretions from running down the throat, which often causes coughing
I encourage you to drink plenty of fluids, cold or hot depending on your preference. A teaspoon of honey can also help relieve a cough.
As for the prescribed dose, it is difficult to say without all the necessary information. I strongly suggest that you contact your pharmacist who can double-check the prescription and validate the dose. He/she can make recommendations to you and the prescriber if an adjustment is appropriate.
I hope that I have been helpful to you and remain available if you have any further questions!
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
