there are cases of gastro at my 4 year old's daycare
he started to vomit on Saturday at the end of the afternoon and 3 times followed. Nothing more until Sunday night when he vomited 1x
he ate slightly on Sunday during the day. This morning he had an episode of diarrhea and feels dampened.
i started to give him some piedialyte.

Hello!
Gastroenteritis is a common infection in children. Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea are common symptoms and can last for a few days.
The main risk for children with gastroenteritis is dehydration, so it is a very good idea to give them pedialyte. At his age, you should give him 100 to 200ml at each episode of diarrhea up to a maximum of 1 liter per day. To make it easier to take, you can have him take small sips every 15 minutes.
If your child begins to show symptoms of moderate to severe dehydration, it is important to take him/her to the hospital. These symptoms include:
  • Excessive sleepiness
  • Lethargy (deep sleep)
  • Apathy (change in general behavior, less energy, less reaction to emotions etc.)
  • Unable to rehydrate by mouth due to vomiting
  • Hollow and/or dark circles in the eyes
  • Going to the bathroom less often

The big one is getting better since yesterday. Now it's the 17 month old's turn.
i have a second question for her. She refuses to drink the pedialyte, but wants her milk and water. If she has not vomited for several hours is it ok to give her these drinks (cow's milk 3.25, water) and not give her the pedialyte?

Yes you can continue to feed her normally. The pedialyte is really recommended if she has diarrhea or vomiting. In case she does, and doesn't want to drink the pedialyte, milk and water can still do the job by hydrating her!

She ate a little bit too and didn't vomit again for the little one. The 4 year old ate normally today and drank but vomited again just now even though he had not vomited since yesterday morning.

Symptoms can last a few days (usually between 24 and 72 hours). The important thing is to see an improvement of these symptoms as the days go by, to continue to use the pedialyte as needed and to monitor the above symptoms!
