My mother was on hormones for many years until May 2018. Since she stopped, she has had heat on occasion. She thought it was due to the summer heat waves, but despite the fall she still has them. She wonders if there is a product that has been proven effective and is available without a prescription to help her. She is only taking Synthroid at this time.

Hi,
What exactly was the reason for the hormone to be discontinued? And how often does she suffer from hot flashes now?

Sorry for the delay... She had been on hormones for 20 years, her doctor decided that was enough. And heat is usually once a day or more, especially at night or in the evening.

Thank you for the information. I do understand that her doctor wanted to stop the hormones.
In a small study done a few years ago, about 1 in 3 women saw an improvement in their symptoms after taking vitamin E every day (about 100mg per day). I think this would be an interesting avenue for her to start with, especially since it is one of the few over-the-counter treatments with a little evidence of effectiveness.
Tell her to try taking it for at least 2 months before concluding it doesn't work. She should also inform her treating team (physician, pharmacist) if she is taking anticoagulants, as there may be drug interactions with vitamin E.
