Is there anything we can try before we go to the doctor?

Hello, our 16 month old boy has had a fever since Sunday and is more tired than usual. The peak was Monday with 39.4 (frontal temperature), we give him Tylenol. This morning, he is at 38. What worries us, it is that he does not want to eat anything any more. We give him things that he usually likes a lot and he doesn't touch them. Before we go to the doctor, we would like to know if there is anything we should try. Thank you!

Hello Ma'am, I'm sorry to read about his troubles!
You did the right thing with Tylenol and encouraging him to drink lots of fluids. However I must advise you that frontal measurement is not adequate to get an accurate temperature value, many factors can alter the measurement and/or falsify it. At this age you have to measure rectally, and any temperature above 38 constitutes a fever.
If the fever persists for 72 hours, you should consult a doctor.
Sincerely,
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
