You did well with Vaseline, that's what I suggest or another ointment like Aquaphor. The important thing is to apply it as often as necessary, there is no maximum number of times during the day, including before eating or drinking and before and after going out.

I also suggest protecting your face from the cold with a scarf or neck warmer even if the trip is short, every time.

Avoid soap or cleansers on the face for the time being.
