Can antidepressants cause numbness?

31-year-old woman2 years ago
I have been taking antidepressants since May 2020. For the past few days or so, I seem to have my left hand (or that fingers?) swollen. I have not gained enough weight to warrant this swelling. I noticed it because my ring is marking me when it wasn't.

Thank you for your question!
In order to provide you with accurate information, would it be possible to know what medications you are currently taking, and since when?
Thank you!

Since May 2020 and I take zoloft (sertraline).

Thanks for the feedback!
Sertraline can infrequently cause swelling. While it is not impossible, it is unlikely that this side effect would occur so long after starting treatment though. Are there any other possible causes?

I contracted COVID around January 8th. It seems that the virus affects the blood vessels. Is this a possibility?

This is not a known symptom of this disease, at the time of writing.

I actually take antidepressants for my anxiety. I often juggle anxiety and real symptoms. I used to think that my swollen hand and the numbness in my hand and sometimes in my arm was still "in my head" or related to my medication. But I am beginning to doubt it. I mostly feel this way when I wake up.

This sensation can occur if your arm is placed in a way that irritates the nerves while you sleep. If the sensation diminishes during the day, in the absence of other symptoms, there is no need to worry.

Even if it happens "several times"?

You mean several mornings?

Yes, that's right

If it is because of the position in which you sleep, yes it is possible that you feel this in the morning when you wake up.
