Can I take Flonase long-term for an animal allergy?

I am currently using Flonase for an animal allergy. How can I make it more effective? I find that I am more sensitive to congestion, that the mucous membranes in my nose are more sensitive and I have a pinkish nose, that I am more irritable at times (less patience). Can I alternate occasionally (like every two months) with a long-lasting oral product (24 hours) such as reactive or other? Will it be as effective? Any suggestions? Thank you for getting back to me quickly (***name removed for confidentiality purposes)

Hello Sir,
Long-term use of Flonase™ is not optimal as it can be linked to irritation in the nasal passages and sometimes even perforation in the nasal septum (the skin that separates the two nostrils inside the nose). Some people also report the type of effects you describe, either irritation or hyperactivity. In addition, there is some evidence that long-term use may have an impact on the development of osteoporosis, hypertension and diabetes. This is because some of the cortisone sent up the nose can be considered to be absorbed into the bloodstream and have an effect elsewhere in the body.
So we should try not to take it every day, and have dose "vacations." Taking Reactin™ or another anti-allergy medication might help you "skip" days, yes.
Trying,
