My baby will have his two month old vaccine soon, can I give tylenol baby a few hours as a precaution before and after his vaccines?

Also, should we trust the weight or the month? I have a 7 1/2 week old baby who weighs close to 13.5 lbs so don't fit the chart on the package! Thank you

According to the recommendations of the INSPQ (Institut national de santé publique du Québec), it is not recommended to give a dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen before the injection (see note at the end of this answer). Instead, if you feel it is absolutely necessary, you may apply an anesthetic cream (e.g., Emla or Maxilene - available without a prescription, but available behind the pharmacy counter) to the application site 30 minutes before the injection. Afterwards, if your child seems to feel sick or has a fever after receiving a vaccine, acetaminophen (Tylenol) may help
In this case, if you have Tylenol or Tempra for 0-23 years, the dose to give would be 1mL every 4-6 hours if needed
Note: Regarding the administration of Tylenol before the vaccine, I tried to find out why and it seems that a study in 2009 showed that acetaminophen can reduce antibody production. This is just one of many studies, so research on this is ongoing (hence why some professionals may still suggest Tylenol before the vaccine and they would not be wrong).
I hope this information clarifies things for you... feel free to continue to contact me if you have any further questions and I will be happy to answer them.
Sincerely,
David Tan, pharmacist
