Hello my baby is 2 days old. I was breastfeeding but because of pain (chapped breasts, cracks) I stopped.

Drinks formula. Has vomited yellow/orange. Is this normal?

Hello Ms,
Thank you for your question. First of all, I refer you to one of our facebook posts that gives several tips on breastfeeding.
In this World Breastfeeding Week, here are some little tips that can be useful if you encounter difficulties (pain, cracks, chapping....):
  1. Check that your baby is well positioned (lips open, open your mouth widely by pressing on the chin);
  2. Contact your pharmacist, he is a resource of comfort and knowledge to help you in this situation;
  3. Contact your CLSC to use a nurse expert in breastfeeding (at home or make an appointment at the CLSC);
  4. Contact a breastfeeding sponsor from the @La Leche League or Nourri-Source Montreal, experience is key;
  5. Leave your breasts "out in the open", (a visit break is advised😉);
  6. Procure yourself some Lanolin cream, if that doesn't work, ask your doctor if a prescription for "Dr. Newman" is suitable for you;
  7. If you have engorged breasts and your baby is full, take a hot shower or pump your milk;
  8. Although used as a last resort, ask about the nipple shield (silicone tip that is put on the nipple for feeds) available in pharmacies;
  9. Try to space out feeds a bit (pacifier and daddy's arm), babies often just need to suck. Now, if your nipples are in poorer condition, the pacifier can be a solution if your baby already takes it. Be careful, pacifiers can cause confusion;
  10. Vary breastfeeding positions;
  11. Give yourself time, breastfeeding is quite a learning process!
As mentioned, breastfeeding is not easy, but very beneficial. Many things can be tried (nipple shield, cream etc). It may not be too late to try again, so I would advise you to contact your CLSC to quickly make an appointment with a specialized nurse. You can also contact the La Leche Line (514) 990-8917, or Nourri-source 514 948-9877 / 1 866 948-5160.
That being said, if you want to continue with formula, I totally understand 😊. Is your baby throwing up in a stream? Or is it a little regurgitated?
