Which antihistamine is compatible with breastfeeding?

36-year-old woman4 years ago
I have a 12 day old baby and I am exclusively breastfeeding. I have seasonal allergy symptoms. What can I take to help me? I experience these symptoms every year. Currently I take ferrous sulfate, regular tylenol and regular naprosyn (related to post partum) No health problems

Hello !
First, congratulations on the arrival of your new baby!
Thank you for your question and for all the details you provided about your condition
Of the antihistamines available on the market, Claritin, Reactin and Aerius can be used without any problems while breastfeeding. Reactin may cause some drowsiness in the infant, but adverse effects on the baby are unlikely
If you used to take one of these 3 medications to relieve your symptoms, you can continue with the one that gave you the most relief. If not, it's a matter of trying one of them to find the one that works best for you. These medications are equally effective, but each person responds differently. A 5-7 day trial may be necessary to get the maximum effectiveness from an antihistamine
Using a saline rinse (like Sinus Rinse) may also help. If you have a cortisone nasal pump (Nasonex, Flonase, Nasacort, etc.), these are also safe to use while nursing.
I hope to have answered your question and remain available for more details if needed!
