Is it common to combine 2 antidepressants?

80-year-old woman5 years ago
I am 76 years old and have been taking Citalopram for 2 years. My doctor has just prescribed me Bupropion in addition. I have never had depression, but two years ago I was feeling depressed. Recently, I've been feeling tired and lacking energy, so my doctor added Bupropion. My pharmacist told me that I should take this medication for the rest of my life, is this true?

Hello !
Thank you for your question!
It is not uncommon to see Bupropion added to a first antidepressant. Bupropion is indeed often used for lack of energy. As for the duration of treatment, it is common to take these medications on a long-term basis, but it is not necessarily mandatory to take them for life. For many people, it is possible to stop taking antidepressants once the condition has stabilized. It will be important to discuss with the team of health care professionals involved in your case when you feel ready, in order to plan a gradual decrease
I hope to have answered your question and remain available if necessary!
