Hello Madam,
The Twinrix™ vaccine is fairly new yet, so we don't have a lot of experience with how long the vaccine will work. Therefore, the Quebec Ministry recommends that we rely on the hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccines that have been in use for several years.
According to the Quebec Immunization Protocol, these vaccines cause efficacy for about 10 to 30 years.
Future will tell us about Twinrix™ causing the same effect, but at this time we have no other data to indicate a shorter duration, or a longer duration.
Tell me,

It's been 20 years since we had the Twinrix vaccine so should we get a blood test to see if we're still immune or should we get the vaccine again? We are going to Africa so we don't want to take any chances.
Thank you!

In Quebec, the vaccine combining protection against hepatitis A and hepatitis B has only been available since 2008. Before that, two different vaccines were used.
It is actually possible to measure the presence of antibodies in the blood to see if you are still protected. Ask your doctor or travel health nurse if she thinks it's necessary in your situation.
