I have seasonal allergies and take claritin daily. Since yesterday, I have a swollen eye and claritin is not working.

Is there any other medication I can take? My eye is swollen at the eyelid and under the eye.

Hello,
A visual inspection of your eye by a pharmacist in person would be preferable to determine the nature of your symptoms. That being said, if we assume that the swelling in your eye is the result of an allergic reaction, I can suggest one of the following two products:
  • Change Claritin for BENADRYL at a rate of 1 to 2 caplets 4 times a day every 4 to 6 hours until the swelling is sufficiently reduced... Benadryl is generally stronger at reducing severe allergy symptoms, but it does cause drowsiness. That said, if it works, Benadryl may be able to significantly reduce your symptoms within about 48 hours. After that, you can start Claritin again to maintain longer-term protection.
  • Apply OPTICROM or CROMOLYN drops at a rate of 1 drop in the affected eye 4 times a day for 1 week (or until healed). These drops are available without a prescription, but are kept behind the counter, so ask the pharmacist. Unlike Visine or Clear Eyes, Opticrom/Cromolyn drops have an anti-allergic and anti-inflammatory effect, and could therefore directly relieve your eye symptoms. You still continue Claritin with Opticrom/Cromolyn, as these are the tablets that will maintain long-term allergy protection.
If the swelling is perceived to be moderate to severe, I suggest BENADRYL. If it is mild to moderate, you can try OPTICROM or CROMOLYN drops while continuing your Claritin.
Another very useful measure would be to apply a hot water compress (not boiling or burning) on your eye for 15 minutes, 4 times a day...
I hope this answers your question. If there is anything else, please let me know and I will be happy to help you.
Sincerely,
David Tan, pharmacist
