Hello, I would like to know if lithium elimination in moderate renal failure is linear? Thank you.

Hello, thank you for your question!
Lithium is almost exclusively eliminated by the kidneys.
Several factors affect the distribution of lithium in the body as well as its elimination: renal function, body weight, circadian rhythm, the use of other medications, hydration level, and age, to name a few.
It is well documented that renal elimination of lithium is reduced in the presence of renal impairment. It is therefore suggested that treatment be started at a lower dose and that blood lithium levels be measured more often.
I hope that I have enlightened you and I remain available if you have any further questions.
Sincerely
Tom Samaha, pharmacist
