Should I apply ice or heat to my injury?

Hello, I went hiking in the mountains last Friday. I had pain in my knees that started towards the end of the climb and on the way back down. I am a beginner in this type of activity, so it was difficult ;) In the following days, my knees were sore, but I thought that everything would pass. I noticed about 4-5 days later that one of my knees was a little swollen, but the pain was less. It's been almost a week now, and still swelling and a little pain especially when going upstairs. I've been applying ice for 2 days and taking ibuprofen. p.s. I would like to continue this activity in the future.

Hello Ma'am, thank you for your question!
In the context of a new injury and in the presence of inflammation, I advocate applying ice in a damp towel (avoid direct contact of the ice with the skin) for 10-15 minutes, as often as desired. If possible, keep the swollen leg slightly elevated compared to the body (e.g., with a cushion under the knee if you are sitting on a couch).
If you notice that it doesn't seem to be getting better, I believe that a physical therapy consultation would be beneficial, as they are the best professionals to assess the pain, establish possible causes, and develop a realistic treatment plan for you and to allow you to continue your activities. Most group insurance plans cover this type of service.
I hope this has been helpful, please don't hesitate if you have any further questions!
