I would like to know if I should stop taking paxil 20 mg if I want to get pregnant, my doctor did not give me a clear answer. He told me to consult if it happens. I have been taking this medication for my social anxiety for almost 5 years. I have heard that heart defects could develop if this medication is taken during pregnancy.

hello, paxil is one of the most studied antidepressants during pregnancy. We generally recommend using the lowest effective dose, especially in the first trimester (early pregnancy). We do not recommend that women who are stabilized on this medication stop taking it, as most studies are very reassuring about paxil. not treating anxiety can often be more harmful. There is a small risk of heart defects. the doctor monitoring the pregnancy may monitor some additional parameters for safety.
if you want to get pregnant, you can always try a dose reduction while still being comfortable with the anxiety. after the first trimester, the dose can be adjusted upwards if necessary. you can ask your family pharmacist to accompany you.

Thank you very much for your answer! I hadn't managed to get such a clear answer from my doctor. That makes me feel better :)
