My 1.5 year old son started to run a fever of 39 very close to 40 at 3am this morning and it is currently 9:30am and it's going to go back to the same number, should I wait 24 hours or should I head to the nearest emergency room?

Hello, thank you for your question!
There is no need to consult at this time if the fever has just appeared. We will consult if the fever persists for 72 hours, or before if your child's condition deteriorates or if he is unable to eat or drink, or if other symptoms occur.
I suggest that you give your child acetaminophen (Tylenol, Tempra and others) for now. Your pharmacist will tell you the exact dose according to your child's weight and the concentration of the product you have on hand.
Also encourage your child to drink plenty of fluids
I hope this was helpful to you and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact me
