Hello. According to many health professionals, taking Valtrex as a suppressive therapy helps to decrease the likelihood of transmission and promotes healing of lesions in people living with genital herpes. I know that condom use is also strongly recommended for sexual activity. If a person is on suppressive therapy, how long does it take for the medication to be effective in reducing the likelihood of transmission? After a week, a month? After how long is it present in the body enough to reduce the risk? Thank you.

Valtrex quickly builds up good blood levels when taken regularly. However, it is impossible to know exactly when it will provide good protection against herpes transmission.

Also, according to a 2004 study of discordant couples (1 with herpes, 1 without) who were given Valtrex, 1.9% of those who took it still developed herpes. Needless to say, condom use is still important, and it is impossible to judge a safe period before stopping its use.
