Synthroid is a drug whose absorption can be affected by food/drugs that are present at the same time (or even a few hours before/after) in the digestive system. Indeed, some products bind (cling) with the Synthroid molecule and thus prevent it from being well absorbed. These are mainly minerals, such as iron and calcium supplements, multivitamins or antacids (Gabiscon, Tums, Maalox). One should therefore AVOID taking these types of products within 4 hours of taking Synthroid. In the same vein, on the food side, dairy products (or calcium-enriched foods) can interact with Synthroid, since they contain a lot of calcium and magnesium. It is therefore important to try to BE CONSISTENT in the type of food you eat when you take Synthroid or in the hours surrounding it. The best way to minimize this is to take the Synthroid on an empty stomach, about 1/2 hour before a meal. Your doctor will prescribe blood tests, usually within 6 weeks of starting treatment, to check the effectiveness of the Synthroid in reaching the desired targets and will adjust the dose if necessary (for example, if your absorption is affected because you always take yogurt near your Synthoid, the doctor may have to increase the dose, that's all. Hence the importance of this blood monitoring)
