Onset of intermittent arthritic pain in knees, left thumb, now right thumb. Is there a supplement that delays aggravation?

Hello,
In natural products, there is no product that has been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt to prevent osteoarthritis. Some studies suggest that glucosamine/chondroitin supplements taken over several months on a regular basis may reduce pain. However, the evidence is not clear on this point. NEM (eggshell) supplements are also marketed to reduce joint pain, but the current data is too small to recommend them. Other available medications (Tylenol, Advil, creams) are used as needed depending on the pain and your health condition.
Note that in the recommendations for osteoarthritis, what has been proven to be more effective than medications and supplements and is therefore recommended first is physical exercise (under supervision). In fact, it is the only "treatment" that can reduce pain, increase joint flexibility, strengthen muscles and slow the progression of osteoarthritis. Also, if you are overweight, weight loss is recommended to reduce pain especially in the knees.

What do you think of Sam or s-adenosylmethionine? Is it available in Quebec and in what form? Thanks in advance.

SAMe or S-adenosyl-L-methionine is a molecule with anti-inflammatory properties. It has been studied in comparison with anti-inflammatory drugs and has a similar efficacy according to some studies. However, its onset of action is a little slower. Indeed, it is necessary to use it at least during 30 days before seeing an effect on the pain. It also does not delay the aggravation of osteoarthritis. The product has some drug interactions and may have associated side effects, so I would advise you to discuss this with your pharmacist to see if the product is compatible with your situation.
According to the Ordre des pharmaciens' database of over-the-counter medications, the company Webber Naturals markets the product in Quebec. Here is the identification number (NPN): 80004422
