Cold medications and Synthroid?

52-year-old woman4 years ago
I have hypothyroidism and take 0.075 mg of Synthroid every day. I have had a very bad cold for the past week and I bought Otrivin and a cold medicine that contains 30 mg of pseudoephedrine hydrochloride, 15 mg of dextromethorphan hydrobromide and 500 mg of acetaminophen per tablet. Is it really serious if I took both of these medications? Have I unbalanced my thyroid gland? What other alternative do I have to relieve my cold symptoms (congestion, cough, headache) if I can't take the two medications mentioned earlier? Thank you for your help!

Hello, thank you for your question. It is not recommended to combine Otrivin and the cold medication you mentioned because both contain a decongestant. Given your symptoms I suggest you take the tablet and stop the Otrivin. Don't worry, these medications will not offset the effect of your Synthroid
I also suggest a saline solution for cleaning your sinuses (Hydrasense or Sinus Rinse), which can be used as many times a day as desired (at least 1 hour before bedtime though). Do you have any other questions?
