I have pain in my lower and middle back, what could be the cause? What can I do about it?

I slept on my back and the very next day I had a pain in my lower back which seems to be a muscle pain. The next day while sitting in my car I had a sudden pain in the middle of my back and it seems to be in the spine. These pains have been getting worse in the last few days.

Hello,
It will be up to a doctor to make the real diagnosis of your situation, but you may be suffering from a semblance of lumbago, i.e. a localized pain in the lower back caused by an unfortunate gesture.
Regardless, the following treatments can help relieve your pain:
  • ROBAXACET or ROBAX PLATINUM: These products have 2 ingredients, a muscle relaxant (methocarbamol, the "Robax" element as I call it) and a pain reliever (either Tylenol in the case of Robaxacet or Advil in the case of Robax Platinum). The muscle relaxant thus reduces the tension usually associated with back pain and adds an extra effect over Tylenol or Advil altogether. However, be aware of the drowsiness that these products can cause.
  • VOLTAREN EMULGEL: An anti-inflammatory cream that is available without a prescription, but must be requested from the pharmacist; it essentially involves a product similar to Advil, but applied directly to the skin. For this purpose, you should avoid any other anti-inflammatory medication such as Advil, Motrin, ibuprofen, Aleve or Robax Platinum (Robaxacet and Tylenol can be taken at the same time as Voltaren Emulgel).
  • ANTIPHLOGISTIN or MYOFLEX: These creams are slightly less potent than Voltaren Emulgel, but still provide relief through a warming effect.
  • HOT COMPRESSES: The effect of heat can relieve back pain. Some people find that cold can relieve them as well, so it depends on the outcome, but generally heat wins out.
There are other treatments that you could use (osteopathy, acupuncture, physical therapy, etc.), but they will usually be second or third line. If the options I outlined earlier don't bring you relief within a week or so, consider consulting your doctor.
I hope this helps a little... If there is anything else, please do not hesitate to contact me again and I will be happy to help you.
Sincerely,
David Tan
