In a situation like this, when the ear pain follows a bad cold, it is quite possible that the pain is caused by fluid and mucus that has passed from the throat into the middle ear.
A visit to the doctor is not necessary if you are willing to do some "exercises", do not have a fever, and the pain is not preventing you from functioning.
These exercises will help you move the fluid and mucus out of the ear and into the throat. This is a modified valsalva. To do this, you need to pinch your nose with your fingers, close your mouth and "blow". While you blow, you must also swallow. This sequence of actions causes the mouth of the canal that connects the throat and ear to open.
To make this maneuver more effective, you can use a decongestant spray such as Dristan™ or Otrivin™ 30 to 60 minutes before the maneuver. This can be repeated twice a day.
