I have a cold sore and I have a 4 month old baby, is it dangerous for her?

I have had cold sores since I was young and I get them regularly. I have had medication for it. I treat it with abreva and essential oil. It goes away after a few days. But now I am afraid to give it to my baby. I have seen that it can be deadly. What should I do to avoid contamination?

Hello,
Cold sores are caused by a virus called herpes simplex. What is really dangerous for a newborn is neonatal herpes, that is, catching herpes during delivery. The infection can affect the eyes and can be serious because of the child's immature immune system. This complication can occur in pregnant women with genital herpes. For this reason, screening is often done during pregnancy and treatment is provided accordingly
In the case of oral herpes, complications in children are rare. The infection can sometimes reach the inside of the mouth and cause ulcers, but this usually resolves without any problems. It is important to remember that most people get herpes as children, but it often goes under the radar. This is because there is a small chance of transmitting herpes even if there are no sores. This is also the reason why this infection is so widespread in the population
That being said, the virus is transmitted through direct or indirect contact. Direct contact includes skin-to-skin contact with the lesions. For example, you should avoid smooching or kissing your child when you have cold sores. For indirect contact, for example, avoid touching your lesions and then touching your child. It is best to wash your hands after handling the cold sore. Also, avoid sharing products (e.g. cream) that have been in contact with the lesions
