What can I do if my 4 year old is suspected of being constipated while waiting for a medical appointment?

My 4 year old son complains of intermittent stomach aches. He eats well, and seems fine for long periods of time. We suspect that he is constipated. We are trying to get him to drink lots of fluids, more fiber and less dairy.

Hello,
Does your child seem to have difficulty passing stools or does she have hard stools? How often does she have a bowel movement? Did her problems start when she was potty training?

Usually he has 2-3 bowel movements a day but now he skipped one day and only had small balls once the next day. He is already clean

How long has he been complaining about stomach aches?

He complained once on Monday night but had a bit of a loose stool, then on Tuesday he was not in pain but did not have a stool. Wednesday he complained and today he looks ok but he just complained for the first time. But he had a normal bowel movement this morning

It is difficult to determine if your child is really constipated based on the symptoms you describe. In fact, we can suspect constipation if the child has significantly fewer bowel movements (e.g., 2 times a week) or has hard stools. In your case, the stomach pain is not consistent with several consecutive days of no bowel movements or hard stools. Also, the symptoms have been going on for less than a week. Personally, I would wait a little while before using a constipation medication.
If your symptoms become more severe and persist for more than a week, you may want to use a laxative such as Lax-a-day. I recommend that you go see your pharmacist who will calculate the dose according to your child's weight
