Hello, I have had two medications prescribed for my first gout attack, Naproxen 500mg twice a day and colchicine 0.6mg. I am currently in a lot of pain and I would like to know if I should take these two medications right away. Also, once the pain is gone, should I continue to take the colchicine? Thank you very much, Martine

Simultaneous use of these two medications is sometimes recommended at the beginning of treatment, yes.

How were they prescribed to you (what does it say on the jar)?

It is registered for naproxen 1 tablet twice a day and colchicine 2 tablets immediately then 1 tablet 1h later then 1 tablet twice a day thereafter for one month

Thank you for the information. You should know that it is indeed possible, when the pain is very severe as in your case, to take the 2 medications simultaneously. This is because Naproxen acts as an anti-inflammatory while colchicine acts more on the "cause" of the gout attack. Usually, colchicine and naproxen are taken at the beginning, then when the pain diminishes, the naproxen is stopped and when the gout episode is considered resolved, the colchicine is stopped. You should also know that these two medications must absolutely be taken with food, in order to reduce the irritation to the stomach.
