There are a lot of handmade masks and I don't know which one to choose (many kinds of fabrics, thickness...). Thank you!

Hello Ma'am,
There is no conclusive study at this time on the exact qualities or characteristics of the material that a handcrafted mask should be made of. However, I will give you some pointers on how to find the best mask.
First, it is very important to choose your mask based on the "fit" in the face. Indeed, the mask should be able to cover the nose to below the chin and not "float" on either side of the face (it should be well glued to the face), and it should not have any holes. In this regard, it is important to note that masks come in different sizes, and many manufacturers make a different model for men and women (and even children). Some also adjust at the elastic bands on the ears.
Next, since we haven't yet identified the ideal fabric component, we can go for a double-layer mask, or ideally, a three-layer one. We prefer a mask without a filter, or if there is one, with a fabric filter (not a vacuum or coffee filter). It is important, of course, to be able to breathe well with the mask. Be aware that under 2 years of age, wearing a mask is not recommended (it is rather dangerous). If it gets wet or damp, it should be changed.
Of course, if you are a health care worker or have access to surgical masks, you should favor these. They are the most effective.
Finally, it is very important to follow the recommendations on mask handling. One should not touch the fabric, except the elastics to put it on, then with clean hands to adjust it at the nose (and one should wash his hands again afterwards). We put it in a small bag in our car after each use and then wash it right away at home.
Be aware that several Quebec companies make masks, and you may have fewer surprises than ordering them on the web from overseas companies.
Don't hesitate if you have any other questions!
Happy day,
Alexandre Chagnon, pharmacist
