How does prune juice work? Is it used as an emollient or stimulant? It contains a lot of potassium. Is it good for people with heart disease? And young children? Thank you very much!

Hello,
Prune juice is neither an emollient, which softens the stool, nor a stimulant, which promotes contractions of the intestinal muscles. It belongs to the category of osmotic laxatives. Given its high concentration of sorbitol (natural sugar), it acts by drawing more water into the intestine, which ultimately increases the frequency of stools. It is therefore a simple way to treat constipation while eating more fiber and drinking more water. Note that apple juice and pear juice have the same effect.
It is true that prune juice contains potassium which is neither good nor bad for heart patients. It is important to know that potassium helps the heart and muscles to function, so a lack of potassium is as bad as a surplus of potassium. A blood test will show the level of potassium in our blood
Prunes also contain antioxidants and vitamin C which is beneficial to the health of children and adults like many other fruits. I invite you to consult this site for more information

Thank you very much! Excellent reference. But can prune juice or prunes make the gut dependent if consumed daily?
Sarah-Yan Chagnon · 6 years ago
No, because they are not stimulating laxatives
