Is a family history of thyroid cancer an absolute contraindication to Victoza/Saxenda?

33-year-old woman3 years ago
My doctor suggests that I start Victoza or Saxenda to help me lose weight (I am obese). I'm not convinced I want to try it, because I'm doing a nutrition follow-up and I'd like to do it that way. Also, I have seen that a history of thyroid cancer may be a contraindication: my mother had thyroid cancer.

Hello, thank you for your question!
Victoza and Saxenda are indeed contraindicated in people with a family history of certain types of thyroid cancers, including medullary cancer and/or endocrine neoplasia type 2
Studies in some rodents have shown an increase in these types of cancers, but there have been no such findings in humans. However, when weighing the risks and benefits, it is best to avoid these types of products if you have this type of family history...
Keep in mind that in the majority of studies, the weight reduction was quite modest, considering that a 5% weight reduction was considered a success, at the maximum dose of Saxenda (3mg/day).
I hope this helps, and if you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask!

Indeed, 5% does not seem like much, considering the risks. Thanks for your answer!

We haven't discovered the magic pill (or injection!) yet. I'm glad to read that you are taking charge of your life and following up with nutrition. Diet and exercise are the foundation for weight loss that will last over time :)
